In a new editorial series, looking at how certain imagery turns creatives on, Creative Director and founder of Oligarch, Dr. Kaushal kicks things off with a mood board that offers insight into the things she likes and how they inform her design process and practice.

(from left to right)

1. "Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger at the airport. I just love these massive black coats which have a very low break, although in my head, they’re darkest navy. The other thing I’m obsessed with is how Kim is just carrying that baby blue cashmere blanket – how to do a blanket! Anyway, I imagine these coats are by Armani. We’ve designed big drowny coats for men and women this season - of course we have! See the Weir for women and the Cover for men."

2. "This is my favourite picture in the entire world. It’s architect Tadao Ando and his team from 1989. I love his black jeans - they’ve inspired our new Riso jean, which will come in washed black and washed blue - and that blousy shirt looks like it’s probably by Yohji [Yamamoto]. I also really like the guy in the corner in his blue jeans, black t-shirt, and kind of weird half-sleeve tailored jacket. Clothes aside, I also just love the joy in this picture with the whole team smiling. I like the idea that in an Oligarch photo, the team would all be as enthused and proud looking as this lot."

3. "This is from Gus Van Sant’s 108 Portraits book, which is one of my favourite books and something I look at constantly. It’s such a mood. This picture isn’t even really about
what he’s wearing - though we will be doing some kind of similar stripe soon - it’s his face, he just looks so alive, or high, whatever. Amazing."

4. "Here’s Jennifer Aniston, also at the airport! I love this because it’s just very casual. I like that she’s wearing a really chunky jersey that’s a bit off and a sort of slim snow pants. I think it’s probably a Maharishi snow pant in a small size.  We’re doing a snow pant for men and I am definitely going to start wearing them. We’re very into women wearing men’s pants at Oligarch, obviously."

5. "This is an old [Martin] Margiela shoot. We’ve put a putty coloured mohair sweater - the Vico - in our latest campaign. There’s something a bit punk about it. I also like the whole setup of this photo - looks like an old Paris tabac or café where you’d sit and enjoy a café crème, doesn’t it? Plus, we always love men wearing pink. Always."

6. Michelle Pfeiffer smoking. All very 1990s. But really, this is about that ombre check shirt. We’ve done a version of that this season in the men’s collection - it’s also quite River Phoenix. I think I’d wear that check shirt under a plain coat, though, not a checked one. That said, we do have some good Prince of Wales check jackets and coats that I’m super into for winter. Also, wasn’t it sort of brilliant when people went out and didn’t do their hair? And lastly, on the topic of Pfeiffer, her wardrobe in What Lies Beneath is insanely good."

7. "I think nylon jackets are just really useful, like our men’s hooded Lessen. There’s something also brilliant about these old paparazzi pictures where people hid, especially given that now everyone is just desperate to be seen on social."

8. "This is a very nice hair and very nice sweater situation. The photo is taken from Portraits, a book by photographer Ingar Krauss, which is extremely nice. Love a cable knit, and we have done those for men and women this season."

9. "If you really want a man, here’s one. Harrison Ford! Look at those jeans! I like to think that the N on his cap is for Nick [laughs]. The jacket is a great shape. The glasses. The takeaway he’s clearly just got from the Chinese [laughs]. But back to the jean - what is lovely is the bend in it and that it’s very narrow at the ankle. I love that."

10. "The way this pair of jeans fit appeals to me, the very low fly and rise on them, the pocket sticking out, worn with boots, and the sexiness of a bit of skin. All very inspiring indeed."
